The NBME will be making some significant changes to the USMLE step 1 exam that will be effective as of May 9,2016.

Here are the summaries of what students should expect

  1. The numbers of questions items per block will decrease from 44 to 40- This means the questions stems will be much longer than previous years with more detailed clinical vignettes. This change also allows you to spend more time on each question.
  2. The total number of questions will decrease from 308 to 280.
  3. The length of the exam will remain the same.
  4. The scores from the old USMLE format with 308 questions and new format (280) will be comparable.

The passing scores are unchanged. USMLE Step 1: 192, Step 2 CK: 209 and Step 3: 196.
